EIT Digital Challenge awarded the 10 best European deep tech scaleups of 2019

A few days ago, EIT Digital has awarded the 10 best European Deep Tech companies in the 2019 edition of the EIT Digital Challenge scaleup contest. A record number of 279 scaleups from 33 countries applied, representing a 40% growth with respect to 2018 and the highest country variety in the 6-year history of Europe’s flagship deep tech competition.

The EIT Digital Challenge targets European digital technology scaleups focused on fast growth of their business in Europe and worldwide. The ten awarded companies will now join the EIT Digital Accelerator that was just recognized as one of the five World Top Public Business Accelerators and the programme with the best pan-European reach, and as Top 4 European Accelerator brand in the Startup Heatmap Europe report. In addition, the first place in each category receives a €50,000 cash prize.

Chahab Nastar, the Chief Innovation Officer at EIT Digital stated: “This is not your usual competition where just the winners count. The 25 finalists have been carefully selected; they are all winners in the sense that they all have evidence of growth potential. The juries saw tremendous qualities in the 10 companies that came on top. We now welcome them into the EIT Digital Accelerator and will give them dedicated pan European support for customer acquisition and fundraising. We want them to become large dominant companies in their respective markets.”

10 flagship scaleups strengthening the digital future of Europe in 5 categories

The 25 finalists presented their innovative digital solutions to juries composed of tech specialists, investors, c-suite level executives of European technology corporations and EIT Digital experts. After thorough examination of the market and internationalization potential of each competitors’ business model, the judges selected 10 winners in five categories representing EIT Digital’s strategic focus areas. Those are Digital Tech, Digital Cities, Digital Industry, Digital Wellbeing and Digital Finance. And the winners are:

DIGITAL INDUSTRY

1st place: Oculavis (DE) – Remote Service Platform with customizable service apps, AR and AI applications
2nd place: Wonderflow (NL) – Helps brands extract actionable insights from customer feedback

DIGITAL TECH

1st place: R3 (DE) – High-performance wireless technology for mission-critical industrial applications
2nd place: QuoScient (DE) – Fully automated cybersecurity platform to manage operative processes

DIGITAL WELLBEING

1st place: Mecuris (DE) – Platform for customizable and 3D-printed prosthetics and orthotics
2nd place: SidekickHealth (IS)- Digital therapeutics platform to prevent and manage chronic diseases

DIGITAL CITIES

1st place: CERBAIR (FR) – Drone detection and neutralisation via radio frequency
2nd place: LORIOT (CH) – Secure and scalable long-range infrastructure provider for IoT

DIGITAL FINANCE

1st place: Zelros (FR) – AI and Machine Learning technology, helping insurances increase sales efficiency
2nd place: Minna Technologies (SE) – Subscription management platform for retail banks

Manuel Opitz, CEO & Co-Founder of Mecuris, the winner of the category Digital Wellbeing sated: “We feel humbled to be chosen among such strong Startup. This encourages us to keep pushing for digital change in the orthotics & prosthetics industry. We applied to win the support of this strong community for international expansion, as at our core we are a digital service company. We want to achieve more with EIT Digital than on our own: Expanding outside of Germany to bring our digital services to more orthopaedic technicians. We currently assess the Nordics, Spain and Italy as well as France.”
